BFR AND KIDNEY DISEASE Our paper discussing the p BFR AND KIDNEY DISEASE

Our paper discussing the potential issues surrounding the use of blood flow restriction training and individuals with renal disease has been published open access in the Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation.

In this paper, we summarize the current state of the literature (9 papers!) on BFR and chronic kidney disease and provide avenues for further studies in the future. We think there's significant potential for BFR to be used in this population to assist in muscle mass and strength gains while not harming the hemodialysis process. In fact, I bet that this approach will become a therapeutic option in the future once we figure out how to optimally integrate it into practice. Particularly, the work of @owensrecoveryscience's Johnny Owens and RIPC may be a suitable primer for optimize musculoskeletal potential of exercise with- or without BFR. Much more to do!

This was a huge learning experience understanding the pathological state of those with kidney disease as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist. I thank @dahancunha and co-authors for the chance to collaborate on yet another important area of BFR training and allowing me the chance to spearhead this manuscript under your guidance.

It is open access on the journal's website and will be on PubMed soon.
